Stem Cell Transplantation for Treatment of Intractable Diseases

چکیده
Hemopoietic stem cells (HSCs) can be harvested from the bone marrow, peripheral blood or umbilical cord blood. HSC transplantation is used to treat hematologic and lymphoid cancers and other disorders. Some reports have indicated that Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT) might cure these intractable diseases--including hematological disorders, autoimmune diseases and age-associated diseases. Intra bone marrowBMT (IBM-BMT) has been proven to be a powerful strategy for allogeneic BMT due to the rapid hemopoietic recovery and the complete restoration of T cell functions. In this review, we summarize the findings of our studies of IBM-BMT to treat some intractable diseases, including cancers such as leukemia, autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and autoimmune pancreatitis, age-related diseases such as osteoporosis and Alzheimer’s disease in mouse models. Li and Ikehara, Ming Li and Susumu Ikehara* Some reports have shown that antibody response is lower in the older than younger humans and the efficacy of vaccinations is reduced [24,25] and that morbidity and mortality are increased in aged mice and humans [26]. B lineage precursors function decreased with aging resulting from the decreasing function of HSCs. IBM-BMT of young marrow cells reversed the reduction of pro-B cells and pre-B cells. The frequency of follicular-B cells in the IBM-BMT group was significantly increased compared to those in the older group [27]. types of mesenchymal origin, such as osteoblasts, adipocytes and Citation: Li M, Ikehara S (2013) Stem Cell Transplantation for Treatment of Intractable Diseases. Recent Technological Advances in Hepatogenic Differentiation of Stem Cells Relevant to Treatment of Liver Diseases
Liver failure, in an acute or chronic form, is a growing health problem ranking as one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Inborn errors of metabolism characterized by defects in hepatic enzymes or other proteins with metabolic functions, such as receptors or transporters accompanied with environmental factors involve etiology and presentation of liver failure. Currently, the only establi...
متن کاملCell based therapies in retinal diseases
Background Degenerative retinal diseases, including age related macular degeneration, glaucoma, and hereditary retinal dystrophies are major causes of blindness. The principal defect in these diseases is cell loss which is amenable to both cell based neuroprotective and neuroregenerative therapies. To briefly review the lines of research and potential candidates for cell based therapies among ...
متن کاملMorphological changes in injured retinal pigment epithelium and photoreceptor cells after transplantation of stem cells into subretinal space
Introduction: Degenerative retinal diseases are main cause of irreversible blindness. Stem cells therapy is a promising way in these diseases. Therefore, mesenchymal stem cells because of its safety can produce degenerated cells and can play important role in treatment. The aim of this study was to examine morphological changes in injured retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and photoreceptor cells...
متن کاملOsteoporosis after stem cell transplantation
Background Stem cell transplantation has become as a novel treatment for end-stage kidney, lung, heart , liver diseases and several hematologic disorders. Improved survival of transplant recipients has raised awareness of post-transplant complications. One of these complications is transplant-related osteoporosis. Methods In this manuscript we review prevention methods for transplant-relat...

In the recent decade, liver diseases with high mortality rate have became one of the major health problems worldwide. Liver transplantation is the most effective and the standard treatment for decompensated liver disease, but, shortage of available organs and inaccuracy in modeling of the liver diseases are the most limiting issues in treatment. Regenerative medicine and cell based therapy str...
متن کاملO13: Human Neural Stem/Progenitor Cells Derived from Epileptic Human Brain in A Self-Assembling Peptide Nanoscaffold Attenuates Neuroinlammation in Traumatic Brain Injury in Rats
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a disruption in the brain functions following a head trauma. Cell therapy may provide a promising treatment for TBI. Human neural stem cells cultured in self-assembling peptide scaffolds have been proposed as a potential novel method for cell replacement treatment after TBI. In the present study, we accessed the effects of human neural stem/progenitor cells (hNS/...
